Leslie Stellwagen, Teaching Theater K-5 Professor

My Teaching Theater K-5 class and I spent a Saturday working at Parkway Elementary School's Playhouse Buildfest. This event was a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) centered event where we made crafts with students and engaged with them in STEM related discussions. The activity my group prepared was Paper Plate Animal Puppets. Students got to create an animal puppet face mask, and then we talked with the child about their chosen animal. We talked about habitats, eating habits, survival needs, etc.
About Me!
Classroom Experience:
Fall 2014:
-
ASU Block I Internship
-
Moravian Falls Elementary School, Moravian Falls, NC
-
Monica Smith, 4th Grade
-
During this 85 hour internship I was given the opportunity to work in a 4th grade classroom. I was able to work with students in small groups, work one-on-one with students, and observe an excellent teacher in action. This internship also included an English Language Learner student case study, a Special Education student case study, a mathematics observation study, and a reading comprehension study.
Fall 2013:
-
ASU Psychology of Teaching and Learning Internship
-
Green Valley Elementary School, Boone, NC
-
Christi Mercer
-
This internship experience had me working in an after school setting with kindergarten students. I was able to spend time with these young students on the playground, during snack/play time, and during homework time where I read to them. I was also given the opportunity to create and teach a science lesson to the kindergarten and first grade students.
Fall 2009-Spring 2010:
-
West Wilkes High School Peer Tutoring
-
Millers Creek Elementary School, Millers Creek, NC
-
Kelly Blevins, 1st Grade
-
Peer Tutoring is a class offered at WWHS that allows a high school student to work in a classroom for a semester. I was lucky enough to work with Mrs. Blevins and her 1st grade classroom for both semesters during my senior year. This experience is what helped me to see that my passion for working with children could become a career in teaching.
Career Goals:
-
My number one goal for my teaching career is to have a long, successful career in the classroom. I hope to provide a safe, interactive, and nurturing learning environment. I hope to inspire and push each and every student I teach to be the absolute best he or she can be and push them to fulfill their goals.
-
At this time, I am hoping to live and teach in Wilkes County, NC.
-
I will graduate from ASU in December 2015 and be imediately avaliable for hire to being teaching in Janurary 2016.
